This six week introductory course, available for individuals interested in building a residence in the High Country Area, teaches students about the principles, techniques and professionals necessary for designing a house.  Students will study the various components of the design process, such as site analysis, programming space, concepts, schematic design, design development and construction documents, through various lectures and workshops.  Working directly with local design professionals, the final class meeting will consist of an interactive design charrette for a new house on a representative building site for the area.  A sketchbook and course pack will be provided for the class discussions and exercises.

Chad Everhart, AIA is a licensed architect in the state of North Carolina and an Assistant Professor of Building Science at Appalchian State University. His current practice and scholarly work focuses on the importance of context in the design and construction of modern structures.

Don Woodruff is a licensed architect with a deep resume of local, regional and national project experience. He has practiced architecture on commissions ranging from projects in the Middle East, the north slopes of Alaska, to elegant mountain homes in North Carolina. His firm DGW Architects was formed in 1995 with the sole purpose of providing to his clients the best possible design service. He listens to the wants and needs of the Owner and designs buildings that meet and exceed the Owners expectations.
He is an Instructor at Appalachian State University, providing students with hands on experience in sustainable design, 3D computer modeling, energy analysis and Building Information Management. His expertise with computer visualization allows his architectural clients to explore their designs in the early concept stages, showing their home in the context of their site, and providing them with design options, solar studies and sustainable building alternatives.
